Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Super Saturday

So, here it is - Super Saturday - the pubs (well some of them) and the barbers (well some of them) are open so I headed down town for a long awaited beer.

A pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord found me sitting outside Jarrow's Albion Gin and Ale House on an unseasonably cold American Independence Day. A socially distanced drinker asked if he had to go inside to smoke whilst another, having been told he must go in by the front door as it was a one-way system said, "just like Sunderland".*

Still, once I got settled, I took a mouthful of this fine ale and and perused the July issue of DownBeat.

As ever, it was full of poignant comments and observations - too many for our Bebop Spoken There archive.

Jay Sweet (on  grants): "They each receive between $300 and $1000. It's like passing out Band-Aids on the battlefield."

... Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn - married banjo players ... (Lance: imagine living next door!).

Lisa Mezzacappa: "What venues will be able to afford to have live music after this? ... Who will be threatened with homelessness and hunger? - and how will we help them?"

Dezron Douglas: "Twelve hundred dollars - that might be someone's mortgage payment in Topeka, Kansas or Cheyenne, Wyoming, or maybe Richmond, Virginia, but that's a third of someone's mortgage in New York City."

There's a whole lot more ... now, let me see, who's streaming tonight?
Lance
PS: Had a haircut (Number one all over!)

* Sunderland's one-way system is renowned for its ability to get drivers from A to B via X,Y and Z!
