Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival is, like many other events, an online festival this year. Over four days there has been a wide variety of concerts, talks and quizzes to enjoy. Today's fourth episode of Norrie'sJazz Hour once again featured conversation between Norrie Thomson (a big supporter of the Classic Jazz Party on North Tyneside) and the Tenement Jazz Band's Paddy Darley.
Norrie has heard just about any of the Scottish jazz outfits worth hearing over the last fifty years otr so. The hour long show featured music, some of it rare in concert recordings or tracks from collectible vinyl records accompanied by many black and white and colour photographs taken at gigs in Edinburgh and elsewhere in Scotland as far north as Inverness.
Bands heard during the hour included Bill Salmond's outfit with Kenny Milne on trumpet, Charlie McNair's Jazz Band, George Penman, the Ness River Rhythm Kings, the Scottish Jazz Advocates playing Stevedore Stomp, Ken Mathieson's Classic Jazz Orchestra and, to close the show, the Tenement Jazz Band with guest Brian Kellock playing Hilarity Rag.
John Burgess' all star band assembled for a tribute to Alex Welsh included luminaries such as Jim Douglas, Enrico Tomasso and Roy Willams (see photo). The archive photos alone are worth seeing and the music is great. Check out Norrie's Jazz Hour on Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival's Facebook page.
