Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rico, Nils and Dulux the Dog - July 17

Rico Tomasso (trumpet, vocals); Nils Solberg (guitar, vocals); Dulux the Dog (woof! woof!)

This evening's Popup Louis featured, as usual, Rico Tomasso, alongside his guest for the weekend, Nils Solberg and the guitarist's dog introduced by Rico as 'the Dulux dog' (see photo). Let's call him Dulux, the dog. Four numbers as always, one vocal number each with imaginary 'barking' vocals by Dulux.
Rico began tonight's live stream by recalling one of his early trumpet tutors,  Mr Dickie Hawdon. Young Rico's first lesson didn't require an instrument as Hawdon preferred to emphasise the importance of breathing exercises and getting his student to imitate the sounds of a bumble bee. Rico said this stood him in good stead, as has the subsequent fifty years of practice!

Can't We Be Friends? for openers, the balance just right with Nils' acoustic rhythm guitar clearly audible behind Rico's trumpet. Nils took a vocal on Goody Goody with Rico unable to resist the refrain: Goody Goody! From Nils' vocal number to Rico's - I Gotta  Right to Sing the Blues. Our host remarked that he always thinks of Jack Teagarden when playing the number and promised more Teagarden material tomorrow (Dress-up Saturday).

In closing, Rico was keen to show a photo of Louis and Lucille, pointing to Lucille's considered placement of Ebony magazine in her bag which, to this day, promotes a positive image of African-American people in the public eye (see photo). Rico, Nils and Dulux went out on Stompin' at the Savoy. Mr Tomasso was in particularly good form tonight. More tomorrow at seven.
