Bebop Spoken There

Steve Coleman: ''If you don't keep learning, your mind slows down. Use it or lose it''. (DownBeat, January 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Pandemic inspires new brass band composition commissioned by Harrogate Festival

(Press release)

Following the cancellation of over 100 events for their Summer Season, Harrogate International Festival have commissioned a new brass band piece inspired by the pandemic to internationally renowned composer David Lancasterled by acclaimed virtuoso trumpeter Mike Lovatt – whose recording career includes the James Bond films, Harry PotterCharlie and the Chocolate FactoryDowntown Abbey and many more.

Inspired by the pandemic, David’s piece, Eclipse, was scored in just five days and represents the darkness and danger facing the arts at this time, with an invitation to remain hopeful – and the £1.57 billion government support package granted to the arts this week gives cautious reasons to do so.

For the world premiere of Eclipse, on Friday July 24, soloist Mike Lovatt will be joined by musicians from all over the world, as a “virtual” orchestra come together on the hallowed Harrogate stage for a collaborative performance as a testament of the power of the arts in this dangerous times. The performance will be part of the Festival’s world-class virtual HIF Weekender line-up, featuring performances with internationally acclaimed musicians including: distinguished cellist Steven Isserlis, the winner of the MIDEM Classique Young Artist Award Navarra String Quartet, multi-award-winning concerto violinist Tasmin Little, Tehran born harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, and more.
