The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Edis: Ballads Before Bed VI - July 14

In recent times online sessions have taken off, big time! Some of them have been excellent both musically and in terms of technical delivery. One of the very best has been pianist Paul Edis' late night YouTube sessions aptly titled Ballads Before Bed. As our host 'went live' he observed that this was the sixth edition of his late night Tuesday half hour sessions. Six ballads, thirty minutes, no further chat...

Kern, Hammerstein II, the Gershwins, Percy Faith, Ellington, Carmichael and Mercer - you can't go wrong, can you? Numbers from some heavyweight productions featured; Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man from Showboat (Kern & Hammerstein II); Bess, You is My Woman Now from Porgy and Bess(G & I Gershwin); Lerner & Loewe's I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face, this was ideal late night material. Edis paused only to rearrange sheet music...

A less familar piece - Percy Faith's Maybe September - caught the ear, Ellington's Heaven from the Sacred Concerts' series lent itself to the late hour, then, to finish, Hoagy Carmichael's Skylark. A favourite tune, this was a fine version. Yes, a seemingly infinite choice of live stream performances, the Ballads Before Bed series is proving to be one of the very best.
