Bebop Spoken There

Sullivan Fortner: ''I always judge it by the bass player: If the bass player is happy, it's going to be a good night". (DownBeat, February 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Abbie confirms gig no. 2 (August 1)!

The Hammer and Pincers in Preston le Skerne near Newton Aycliffe has reopened for business and the pub's commitment to live music remains undiminished. A week on Saturday (August 1) local hero Abbie Finn returns to her old stomping ground to play a trio gig with Harry Keeble and Paul Grainger.

Drummer Abbie emerged on the jazz scene thanks, in no small part, to Durham Music Service's learning and performance opportunities. From County Durham to Leeds College of Music and on to Trinity Laban, Abbie is now forging a career in the music business. On Sunday (July 26) Abbie and co will be gigging at St James' and St Basil's Church in Newcastle then, one week later, the trio will be entertaining pub goers across two sets from 6:30pm in an outdoor, 'socially distanced' setting at the Hammer and Pincers. Abbie informs BSH that there will be a tipi adjacent to the pub and food and drink will be available on the day, although it could be the kitchen will close by six o'clock. For further information regarding social distancing measures which inevitably will be in place contact the Hammer and Pincers on 01325 314873.
