Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Farewell Blues

It's a familiar cry - "What do I do with my collection of CDs/LPs/EPs/45s/78s/tapes/cylinders/piano rolls/fag ends discarded by..."

We all have wall to wall memorabilia whether it be books, magazines or records. We cherish them, we want to see them go to a good home, we want them to be loved as much as we have but, when the day comes for us to say goodbye to them, how do we go about it?

It's no good waiting until after we've joined Louis, up there, or Miles, down there. By that time, the movers and removers will have moved in - "Jazz? nobody wants that stuff. chuck it in the skip!"

So, before that happens to me and countless others, I'm open to suggestions ...

Assuming I'm not with Miles before you, I'll take the CDs and give them a good home or find a good home for the ones I already have or don't want. I may try and flog a few along the way, but it all goes back in one way or another.

I was once told you could make a plant pot out of a 78 record but not everyone wants
their collection to grow.

Yes, I can understand you wanting to remain anonymous ...

Does this mean you don't have any videos, DVDs, 8 tracks, reel to reeels? I'm sure you'll have some books of interest.

Steve, I have got more books than your local library. I'm currently reading one now which I will pass on to you for review purposes after I've finished reading.
