Album review: TRYPL*

Ryan Quigley (trumpet); Paul Booth (saxes/flute/bass clarinet); Trevor Mires (trombone) Alex Wilson (piano); Dimitris Christopoulos (bass); Edwin Sanz (perc); David Giovanni or Tristan Banks (drums).

You want excitement? - you got it! Boy have you got it!

I must confess that when I first looked at the blurb - Latin jazz - I uttered a mild expletive that ended with "... bossa novas!" Then I looked at the personnel and smiled - this wasn't going to be a bland Jobim cocktail lounge set. This was going to be something and it was - something else!

Where did I leave my book of superlatives? Oh yes, I put it in the charity bag. Nothing within its pages could do justice to this.

Paul Booth and Ryan Quigley blow like as though there's no tomorrow - maybe there isn't but, if that is the case, I can think of no better way to go!

To my eternal shame, although I knew Trevor Mires by name I'd never actually heard him. Well, now that I've heard him all the other slidemen are vying for second place.

With three hornmen such as these blowing their socks off (and mine too) it needed a strong foundation and they got it with Wilson, Christopoulos, and Sanz along with Giovanni and Banks who alternated the drum pad.

8 of the 9 tracks are originals with Booth (3), Quigley (2), Mires (2) and Wilson (1) the providers. The ringer is Osvaldo Farrés' Tres Palabras - as beautiful a ballad as any that came from south of the border and beyond.

This one will be on my player forever - maybe even longer If I can come to a deal with the man upstairs.
Lance.

* TRYPL is an acronym of the leaders' first names - Trevor RYan PauL

The album is due for release on August 21 by Ubuntu Music (UBU0063). It can be pre-ordered via the usual suspects or at a record store near you.
