This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Rico, Luca and Humpty Dumpty celebrate Louis Armstrong's birthday - July 4

What was that? I haven't a clue!  said Rico. As usual Rico Tomasso played something off the top of his head that was in the style of the great man. The 'great man' being Louis Armstrong, who's birthday it would have been today. Well not quite, but don't let the facts get in the way of a good story, a story that Armstrong himself happily perpetuated throughout his life. Body and Soul (Armstrong recorded it c.1930) with Luca's introduction got the celebration under way followed by a request for Keyhole Blues - Yeah, what a tune! exclaimed Rico. 

If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight  opened with Luca's intro as a photo of Armstrong dominated the screen, the screen changing to capture Rico's vocal and, as our Dress Up Saturday host took another drink from his bottle of beer courtesy of Norfolk's Humpty Dumpty Brewery, it was almost time to go. 

Almost, but not before Rico spoke with great pride of meeting Armstrong when he was a boy (the photo shows a young Rico chatting to Armstrong in an airport departure lounge). More superb piano playing from Signor Filastro accompanied Rico's trumpet and vocals on the closer Double Dare You.  Next week (Friday and Saturday at 7:00pm) Rico will be joined, all the way from Portland, Oregon, by pianist Andrew Oliver.
