Radio Tyneside's weekly Geordie Hour programme focussing on everyone and everything on the local 'Geordie' music scene will occasionally include a jazz track from a well-known musician/band. On Sunday (July 19) presenter Gary Hogg devoted an hour of music performed by female musicians and, sure enough, several of the names were indeed familiar to a jazz (and blues) audience.
The first track following the news headlines at six o'clock featured Mo Scott and her band taken from a live recording of Mo singing Walkin' Blues. Who else would feature in the play list? In between folk, pop and rock numbers we heard Caroline Irwin with the Keith Stephen Trio singing Cuckoo (lyrics in French, no less), Emma Fisk's accomplished Hot club du Nord playing Exactly Like You and swinging vocals from Ruth Lambert on 'S Wonderful.
For six decades and more award-winning Radio Tyneside has broadcast music and speech prgorammes to its core audience - that's those finding themselves 'residing' in one of the region's hospitals. In recent times the station's audience has grown beyond measure with a switch from AM to 93.6 FM and online at www.radiotyneside.co.uk. If you have a CD to plug and it has a 'Geordie' connection get in touch with Mr Hogg and, likely as not, you'll find yourself on radio.
