Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Adrian 'Birthday Boy' Cox's Sunday Service - July 12

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals)

Another Sunday sermon - socially distanced, of course - by preacher Adrian Cox. Clarinet and sanctifying vocals, hallelujah! Saints and sinners by the score took a virtual pew to hear 'the truth', that's the truth!

Preacher Cox celebrated his birthday yesterday (see photo - balloons and cards on show) and chose to dedicate today's first number - When I Grow Too Old to Dream - to himself, vocals, snapping fingers 'n' all. This Sunday Service comprised a random selection of requests from his many live stream parishioners, as in previous weeks, attracting more than one hundred brethern. Highlights included Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor (superb vocals), Slipped Disc (Benny Goodman), 'S WonderfulSweet Georgia Brown (one Cox hadn't played for some time) and another vocal on You Meet the Nicest People in Your Dreams. All excellent, hallelujah!

A winning vocal on Stardust maintained the highest of standards, a co-written original (with Giacomo Smith of Kansas Smitty's fame) titled Take Me Home, very much in the New Orleans' style, and, to close this week's sermon, a Crescent City hymn, again with great vocals and hand claps, I'll Fly Away

Next week's Sunday Service has been cancelled due to the fact that Cox and pianist Joe Webb have a rather special date with Dizzy's in NYC. Thanks to Cox having an excellent working relationship with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center set-up, the British duo readily accepted an invitation to live stream via Dizzy's Club. It's the kind of gig offer you don't think twice about! So, 7:30pm NYC (that's 12:30am, half past midnight Monday morning). Be sure to tune-in because gig opportunities like this aren't ten a penny!
