Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Luca di Luzio – Globetrotter

Luca du Luzio (guitar*); Max Ionata, Alessandro Fariselli (tenor sax); Jimmy Haslip (electric bass); David Weckl (drums); George Whitty (keyboards)
(Review by Hugh C)

Luca di Luzio has been playing music for 30 years and has decided to “tell [his] music history through 7 original tunes and two traditional standards”.   He declares they are “seven stories, talking about different moments in my life, about people who have been close to me, and about people who have unfortunately passed away”.  He finds the easiest way to talk about himself and look into his deep feelings is through melody, harmony and rhythm.  There are certainly elements of all three of these constituent musical parts in this self-released offering, Globetrotter.

The CD runs for 37 minutes 37 seconds and has eight tracks on it, the final, ninth “bonus” track (S.I.S. - Simple Italian Song) is only available by download from Luzio’s website in exchange for your email address (cheeky!) - I have not availed myself of this opportunity.

The CD commences with Smile!, an upbeat number with a simple groove and a solo contribution by Ionata on sax.  Mr Brown (dedicated to guitarist Dean Brown) has a distinctly funky feel introduced by Haslip’s bass and Weckl’s drums joined later by the leader’s guitar.  Jazzlife features Fariselli on saxophone, again in an upbeat groove.  Buena Serte has a slower, balladic feel before Elisir – composed by Luzio and starting with a phrase from an Emily Remler solo.  Sunshower (Kenny Barron) is a tune Luzio used to play with a colleague, Marco Tamburini.  Pop Fla is in a Latin style.  The actual final track on the CD, Naima (John Coltrane) is simply one of Luzio’s favourite standards, which he has been playing for about 20 years.

Overall the CD is nicely packaged in a cardboard case with helpful (to reviewers at least) explanatory liner notes and a separate booklet.  The overall feel is quite straight-ahead, pleasant to listen to, with a nice sound from all contributors, but perhaps relatively tame.

The CD is released now, allegedly available from “all fine online retailers” - certainly use of a major search engine reveals options for purchase, with access to streamed content from several well-known players.

*For fellow fret-heads – Luzio plays Benedetto guitars, D’Orazio strings, DV Mark Amps
