Begley and Edis had spent the weekend tutoring at one of the Jazz Co-op's highly acclaimed workshops. Several of the students from the course made their way to the evening's gig to observe their educators practicing what they'd preached and, judging by the applause and demands for an encore, concluded that it was money well spent.
I last heard heard Begley at the nearby Newcastle Arts Centre in April last year. The voice hadn't changed and nor had the set list which wasn't surprising as she was in effect touring the same album Small Flame. What was surprising was the fact that she still needed the crutch of the lyrics on a music stand.
However, if the end deserves the means, then so be it.

The usual intermission spent socialising - it's nice to have proper conversations rather than texts and things.
The second set got underway with Robin and Rainger's Easy Living followed by Richard Rodgers' The Sweetest Sounds (written without Hammerstein!); Ain't no Way (Aretha Franklin); Gentle Rain; Woodstock; Social Call then, for an encore, Nature Boy - even a fast 3/4 did nothing for this overrated ditty. although our duo did try.
Nature Boy notwithstanding, it was an enjoyable gig. Begley keeping the scatting to a minimum and Edis now surely the numero uno when it comes to accompaniment - the interplay between voice and piano was mesmeric. Lance
