This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Oliver Theophilus Jones, (1934 - July 22, 2026.)

The sad news has reached me of the passing of Canadian jazz pianist Oliver Jones.

One of the few pianists able to match his fellow Canadian Oscar Peterson's dazzling technique, north east jazz fans took him to their hearts over the course of three memorable gigs played for Jazz North East at the Corner House in Heaton, then the epicentre of local jazz.

1988, 1990 & 1991 were the years when Oliver Jones played there stretching the local bass and drums to the limit. Fortunately, I had the foresight to buy a 1984 Montreal recording - The Many Moods of Oliver Jones. Fond memories of a piano giant.

I have a tape of the concert at The Corner House in April 88…my late husband Ray Truscott on bass and Adrian Tillbrook on drums…the second set was all busking….no rehearsal…!!
’stretched’ was not the word Ray used when he got home 🤣🤣
