This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. KSTV: Playback session - Introducing...Rubén González. Feb. 27

An evening of Cuban music celebrating a legendary album. I say "legendary" as that's what came up when I Googled although, in truth, I was unfamiliar with it although I did know of the Buena Vista Social Club of which Rubén González was once a part of.

It was very well played and I was impressed by Barry's piano feature Como Siento Yo and Caetano played some amazing things on congas, timbales and the various other items in his bag of tricks. Jas too occasionally stood back from her modified kit to shake and scrape things. Alex was relatively subdued until the final number when she really cut loose giving us a timely reminder of the jazz chops that won her the 2016 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year award.

Overall, beautifully executed as it was, it didn't inspire me to visit Cuba.
