James Hudson, an alumni of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, takes a fresh look at a choice collection of "rare and celebrated" standards. In truth they're more celebrated than rare. I doubt that few, if any, of the songs have been covered less than twenty times on record and many times more at gigs!
However, what does make Hudson's version's rare is the fact that, despite following in the footsteps of Crosby, Sinatra, King Cole, Ella, Harry Connick Jnr., Mel Tormé and a host of other legendary names. he doesn't try to step into their shoes but remains true to himself and the song.
A pleasing voice, not averse to taking the occasional chance, backed up by an ace rhythm section makes Tomorrow a very listenable album. It won't replace recordings by the above but, I'd like to think that in years to come, and after maybe a season or two in Vegas, James Hudson will be able to stand alongside them with his head held high.
Alternatively, he could take the fast track and win Britain's Got Talent or The X Factor - at least he could if he didn't have so much class.

Joe Hill and Jack Tustin impressed when NYJO played the Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender in October 2018. We'll be hearing more from these guys, that's for sure.
