Gene Austin may seem an usual choice for a jazz stream, he wasn't a jazz singer by the most elastic use of the term although he did hang out with them and recorded with Fats Waller. Nevertheless, many of the songs associated with him later found their way into the jazz repertoire picking up a few gold discs for Austin along the way.
Jalen N'Gonda may not as of yet been awarded any gold discs but he most certainly is a jazz singer with a voice that's quite unique.
The programme kicked off with Jalen singing After You've Gone - it was fast, faster than Austin, Gene and almost as fast as a souped up Austin Mini Cooper! He needed a rest after that workout so the trio gave us She's Funny That Way and When Your Lover Has Gone. Nice relaxed playing.
Jalen returned for You're Driving me Crazy followed by an ultra-sensitive version of Bye Bye Blackbird which, going by the sidebar comments on YouTube, was the killer. Blackbird was taken at around about the tempo that Miles used to favour whilst Lonesome Road was at Muggsy Spanier speed.
The evening was drawing to a close but not before we heard Gene Austin Blues and One Sweet Letter From You.
A good day at the office for trio and singer.
