This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Brandon Sanders - The Game Changer (Savant Records Inc.)

Brandon Sanders (drums, leader); Stacy Dillard (tenor sax); Warren Wolf (vibes); William Hill lll (piano) + Jeremy Pelt (trumpet); Briana Swann (vocal)

A cracker! Hard bop for today by a team of topnotchers. Lead from the rear by stickman Sanders the groove is in from bar one with gutsy tenor solos from Dillard, vibraphone magic from my favourite vibesman Wolf and the third generation of William Hills on piano as forceful or restrained as the number demands.

Pelt has the chops for his guest appearances. Laid back or shooting high, open or muted, he added an extra dimension to the ensembles. 

Swann  charmed the night owls with her delightful rendition of Quiet Nights and Footsteps in the Dark. Throughout it all Wheeler is rock solid apart from his solo on Pamela the Queen where he takes full advantage of his freedom.

Highly recommended for listeners who enjoy updated Blue Note ála the Jazz Messengers alongside tasteful ballad playing. I love the comment in DownBeat where Herb Boyd referred to the record as “…a slam dunk for the former hoopster (Sanders is a former pro basketball player).”. He nailed it! A slam dunk it certainly is! Lance
