Strayhorn's Chelsea Bridge invariably has a reflective, early evening feel. One of lovers, hand in hand, gazing into the river below. However, it has been suggested that the immortal composition was inspired by a painting, not of Chelsea Bridge, but of Battersea Bridge. Maybe the image should have been of someone walking their dog or looking for a lost cat! Tonight's rendition was of someone searching for, and finding, Bill Evans.
This is the tops! All of the last few KS sessions have been great but this one tops the lot and there were only two playing. Less is more? - You betcha! and, let me tell you, when it's Will Barry and Will Sach the word only is totally out of context
Tadd Dameron book-ended the set, opening with On a Misty Night and wrapping it up with Lady Bird. Both absolutely superb takes. Dameron's compositions rate alongside the best and deserve to be heard more often.
Harold Land's Landslide came up next. Dexterity was needed for this one and we got it. The title also got me to thinking that, when the next jazz elections come along, the Smitty's will be the party to beat. On tonight's performance the safe seats of Bass and Piano look to be up for grabs. And, if anyone still has doubts, then Mulgrew Miller's Tongue Twister should allay them
Larry Goldings' Sticky Mack and Horace Silver's Strollin' brought us to the aforementioned Lady Bird which rounded off a great session.
