So sad to report that George MacKellar died at the weekend. George, father of Berklee student and drum-ace Matt, was a regular at many of the region's jazz gigs - back in the day when we had such things. He was very supportive of Matt's musical ambitions and ability. I personally found him to be a very affable person, friendly and easy to get along with as I'm sure did everyone else who knew him.
George MacKellar was 60. To say he will be sadly missed is an understatement ...
Our condolences and deepest sympathy go out to his family and friends.
May he Rest In Peace.

So sad to hear this. For years we spent evenings driving, hanging around, watching and enjoying our boys grow into great musicians . He was supportive , and, as you say, affable. He loved jazz. May he rest in peace.
I’m really sorry to read this. George was so supportive of Matt and the Early Bird Band, all the education work I was involved with and the jazz scene in general. He was a keen musician himself, and much better at playing the sax and improvising than he’d ever give himself credit. Rest in peace George.
I first met George at the Chillingham in Newcastle. He was there acting as Matt's chauffeur and roadie. Subsequently, we met at Early Bird sessions and gigs across the region. I'll remember George as someone who always had time to say hello, always with a smile.
