This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Music of 1928 with the Glenn Crytzer Quartet (Songbook Session #9) - Jan. 3

It's 1928. Four guys, immaculately dressed, are blowing some of the hottest music this side of Hell. Somebody once complained that The Devil had all the best tunes and, judging by tonight's performance, he did! 

'28 was a good year tune-wise - I hadn't realised just how good - and the Crytzer Quartet picked out some of the best that 92, going on 93, years later are still worth mining.

It's a good show by four great musicians well steeped in the idiom.
Crytzer is a guitarist in the Marty Grosz image - great  playing interspersed with humour - "What time's your dental appointment?" - "2:30" (tooth hurty!) He also sings.

Davis is known from the Whitley Bay Jazz Party and, amazingly for one so young, blows like Bix, Muggsy, Ruby Braff and ... himself.

On clarinet, Alexander has the Wilber/Davern fluency reminiscent of early Benny/Artie.

Andrew Hall, just stands back and holds it all together. With no drummer the ball is in his court. Unlike some more modern sessions where bass solos abound (less is more) Hall does the business and only stepped forth for a few bars in the last number.

Next week the show switches to Saturday although there is still a Sunday session.
