This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Rachael & Alex playback Paul & Gerry. Two of a Mind @ Kansas Smitty's - Jan. 21

Another of KSTV's playback sessions. This time, recreating a recording made by Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan in 1962 with Alex as Gerry and Rachael as Paul.

A minor gem helped along, not least, by the two sax players' verbal interplay between tunes and the musical interaction when the chips were down. They bounced everything off each  other both in words and in music but when they got down to business it was the real deal.

Alex probably sounded more like Gerry than Rachael did Paul. If you play baritone you sound like Gerry. Not many players have the chops to produce the cavernous sound of Carney and those that have would probably struggle to match it with Gerry's dexterity - Carney included!

Rachael's playing was more blues influenced than Desmond's although her sound did lean towards his fragility. It didn't matter, these aren't cloning sessions, they're 2021 interpretations and few have done it better than this duo up front and, natch, helped along by back-benchers Jas and Will. Keep them in mind when the jazz elections come around.

The beauty of tonight (and the original) was that it wasn't a case of tune, solos, fours, tune. Instead it was an often fragmentary look at the tune followed by solos and exchanges (not the dreaded fours) but meaningful responses and inspired interplay.

The material was played in album order: All the Things You Are; Stardust; Two of a Mind; Blight of the Fumble Bee*; The Way You Look Tonight; Out of Nowhere and Easy Living.

It's the only game in town - Tuesdays to Saturdays.
