R.I.P. Sammy Nestico

Any one who's ever played in a big band or even just listened to one will be familiar with the work of Sammy Nestico who died yesterday (Jan. 17). His scores, whilst usually straight ahead, were never easy sight reads but well worth the effort and always swinging. I doubt if there is a big band playing today (if bands of any size were playing today) that doesn't have several of his charts in the pad.

From his work with Count Basie on he was an undisputed master of his craft.

He will be sadly missed by musicians everywhere but the rich legacy of  his arrangements and compositions will ensure that his name lives on.

Sammy Nestico was 96.

May he Rest In Peace.
