Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rico's Popup Louis with Nick Dawson - Jan. 22

Rico Tomasso (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals); Nick Dawson (piano, bass synth, vocals)

I really don't know what to say said Rico Tomasso. Our host was, of course, talking about the death, yesterday, of musician and friend, Keith Nichols. Somewhat lost for words, Rico said he would pay fulsome tribute to Keith next week. Who Walked in When I Walked Out? as recorded by Ella and Louis opened this week's Popup Louis. Accompanying Rico and making a welcome return, pianist Nick Dawson. By way of a dedication to Keith, this evening's duo played (Rico singing) I Can't Give You Anything but Love, taking it at a slower tempo than usual, something Louis Armstrong did back in the 50s, said Rico.

Raising a glass to Keith, Rico kept the show on the road with a measured S'posin'  (comp. A. Razaf). Gene de Paul's I'll Remember April featured Nick Dawson playing piano and synth bass. Rico quipping he didn't want to remember last April! Al Jolson, Carolina in the Morning (comp. W. Donaldson, lyrics Gus Kahn), Dawson singing, Rico blowing a swinging chorus. Cole Porter, the first of two, Rico picking up his flugelhorn on It's Alright With Me. Staying with Porter and his mellow horn, Rico fancied playing You're Sensational (think Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly in High Society).

Rico signed off with My Gal Sal. Don't forget, next week (Friday 29, 7:00pm) Rico will be paying tribute to his friend, the late, great Keith Nichols.
