Bebop Spoken There

Clare Teal: "If you're brought up in a working-class family, you haven't got money for records so everything you get hold of, you treasure, learn to love, and I loved those Ella tapes." - (Radio Times 23-29 January 2021)

The Things They Say!

Hudson Music: Lance's "Bebop Spoken Here" is one of the heaviest and most influential jazz blogs in the UK.

Rupert Burley (Dynamic Agency): "BSH just goes from strength to strength".

RIP Howard Johnson

Howard Johnson, the undisputed master of the tuba and other low instruments including baritone sax, passed away this morning (Jan. 11).

I was fortunate in that I heard him at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1982 where he was part of the George Gruntz Orchestra. It was quite a concert with Charlie Mariano on alto and Sheila Jordan doing the vocals. Howard's powerful sound filled out the ensembles helping to make it one of the most tonally complex big bands outside of Ellington.

In the photo I guess he had a few bars rest! May he enjoy many more in peace.

Howard Johnson was 79 - he will be sadly missed by many.
