This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Anth Purdy: Swing Jazz Guitar @ The Quakerhouse, Darlington - May 5

This was one gig not associated with this year's Darlington Jazz Festival! The Quakerhouse pub presents live music several nights a week, week in, week out. Blues, rock, pop and, yes, jazz, but this late Sunday afternoon appearance by Northumberland's Anth Purdy offered a rockabilly-like take on some of the pioneering guitarists.


As a solo performer Purdy deploys a box of tricks which allows him to lay down a rhythm track and improvise over it with frequent use of a tremelo arm. The many jazz fans in town would have recognised the names - Charlie Christian, Les Paul, Django Reinhardt - as Purdy spoke, at times reverentially, about his guitar heroes. 

Purdy's rock 'n' roll leanings were evident in his guitar playing and dress code. The Ventures, Big Jay McNeely, a Dick Dale surf sound and an original, The Buckle Up, written as an homage to The Hucklebuck, neatly summed up what Purdy's gig is about. The Darlington Jazz Festival beckoned once more...
