This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. GIJF Day 3: Jazz from the North

The afternoon session in the Jazz Lounge necessitated leaving the concourse and its interesting and varied line-up of gigs. Neil Yates’ Five Countries Trio opened the show to another capacity audience. Trumpeter Yates crossed the divide; jazz, folk melodies, world music. The tone poem Flutter and Flight expertly evoked the frenzied cries of ravenous seagulls and the inherent dangers of the (unsuspecting) al fresco diner! Zsolt Bende played Charlie Byrd-style acoustic guitar and percussionist Cormac Byrne maintained a consistent rhythmic pulse throughout an atmospheric set.
North east based Watson Walker Edis have, to date, played very few gigs. Three previous performances were of the highest standard and this festival performance made it four. Pianist Paul Edis, busy throughout the weekend in other contexts, sensitive drummer Rob Walker and the virtuoso saxophonist Lewis Watson presented a suite of tunes ranging from delicate hues skillfully sketched to stirring blood and guts blowing. Excellent.

I feel I should mention 'Odderrang' which was the only one of the three bands I caught on the Sunday and who didn't get a mention in this review. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Sigur Ros meets EST with some Radiohead thrown in too. Lovely onstage vibe - fantastic AND sympathetic players. Very inspiring!
