Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2013 Sunday Afternoon Free concerts.

Sunday 7 April. The Sage Concourse. 1:30 - 7:00 pm
Afternoon Jazz.
(Preview by Russell)
Sunday. The last day of Gateshead’s annual jazz shindig. Arrive early in time for brunch and catch the first of the concourse performances. What do you mean you were at the late night jam session and didn’t get home ‘til 5:00 am.? This is no time to sleep and don’t forget tonight’s jam session at Hoochie Coochie starts at eleven o’clock! Peruse the programme and decide who you’ll hear on the concourse, which hall you’ll pop into, who you must catch…decisions, decisions. One thing you must do is be around on the concourse sometime around 3:30 pm. More of that later.
Sunday 7 April. Music Education Centre. 4:30 - 6:00 pm
Way In to the Way Out
You don’t like ‘free’ jazz. You don’t like ‘out’ players. You don’t know what it is and who they are? You’re tempted to say you could care less. Good - this is just the event for you! Two of the nicest guys you could wish to meet - Alex Hawkins (pianist and composer) and vibes star Corey Mwamba - will be chatting about the music, listening to a few discs, discussing the history of the music and maybe playing a bit themselves. They are sure to welcome questions, happy to engage with those sufficiently keen/curious to be there. Tickets are free. Book in advance to be sure of a seat.
Sunday 7 April. The Sage Concourse. 3:30 pm
Saxophone Massive with Andy Sheppard
Over the last two months Andy Sheppard and Chris Sharkey have been working with a vast number of saxophonists to produce a work for, well, a vast number of saxophonists. Cameras at the ready, this will be some spectacle! As for the noise? We’ll soon find out!
Has someone contacted the Guinness Book of Records?!!!
Russell.
