Bebop Spoken There

Kurt Elling: ''There's something to learn from every musician you play with''. (DownBeat, December 2024).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2013 Preview Saturday April 6 - Late Sessions

Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2013 Preview
Saturday April 6. The Sage Concourse. 10:00 pm
Paul Edis Sextet
(Preview by Russell).
Durham’s Paul Edis will a busy man at this year’s Gateshead International Jazz Festival. He has provided charts for Jambone and is a key figure in Andy Champion’s ACV yet will find time to assemble his sextet for a late night gig on the concourse.
Highly rated by Alyn Shipton, pianist Edis is sure to win new fans (and sell more CDs!) as the band delivers another accomplished set. Edis’ regular trio - Mick Shoulder (double bass) and Adam Sinclair (drums) - will be augmented by a first-rate frontline comprising Graeme Wilson (saxophones), Graeme Hardy (trumpet & flugelhorn) and Chris Hibbard (trombone). The critically acclaimed CD There Will Be Time is sure to feature and it would come as no surprise if we hear one or two new numbers. Recommended.
Saturday April 6. Northern Rock Foundation Hall. 10:30 pm
Jens Thomas & Veneri Pohjola – Speed of Grace: a Tribute to AC/DC
This could be fun. German vocalist and pianist Jens Thomas has re-worked the music of AC/DC. In on the act is Finn Veneri Pohjola (trumpet) and wouldn’t it be great if Brian Johnson put in an appearance? Geordie Johnson may be Florida-resident but he did on one occasion pop into Shieldfield Social Club for a pint and ended up on stage with the ‘turn’ for an impromptu Nutbush City Limits! One way or another this is sure to be a Highway to Hell.
Saturday April 6. Hoochie Coochie. 11:00 pm
Late Night Jazz, Funk and Soul
More late night magic at Hoochie Coochie. More festival stars are sure to put in an appearance to jam or chill to cool DJs. Pay on the door.
Russell.
