This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2013 Preview Saturday 6 April. North Spirits

Northern Spirits in Hall One on Saturday evening is a major event, perhaps the event of the weekend. Two works inspired by the north east landscape form the centerpiece of the evening; the late Ian Carr (trumpeter, composer, broadcaster, writer) wrote the suite Northumbrian Sketches in the 1980s and it has never been performed by orchestra and jazz group in the north east until now and Tim Garland, who has made his home in Whitley Bay, has written Songs to the North Sky, a suite for jazz trio and orchestra. 
The Sage Gateshead’s world class Northern Sinfonia will be joined by an array of internationally acclaimed jazz musicians under the baton of Clark Rundell to perform the suites. The reeds of Garland and Tim Whitehead, the imperious trumpet of Henry Lowther, the virtuoso pianist Gwilym Simcock and percussionist Asaf Sirkis together with bassist Andy Champion will contribute their considerable talents to what is sure to be a memorable evening. Lighthouse (Garland, Simcock and Sirkis) will play a trio set.
Tim Garland will be in conversation in a pre-concert talk with Alyn Shipton (6:30 pm). Free to ticket holders.
