Jazz Record Requests
with Alyn Shipton

An edition of BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Record Requests will be recorded in Hall Two on Saturday afternoon. The
legendary programme, recently rejuvenated by the appointment of Alyn Shipton as
presenter, is a ‘must listen’ every Saturday afternoon (or evening as it has
been shunted to of late thanks to opera’s pre-eminence on Radio 3). Festival
artists, including Tim Garland, Gwilym Simcock and Zoe Rahman will choose their
own favourite recordings and members of the audience will have a chance to make
their own request. A sheer delight. Free but ticketed.

Afternoon Jazz
A cornucopia of (often
unexpected) delights. The water front concourse sweeps from east to west
offering stunning views of the Tyne and its bridges across to Newcastle . A great place to meet and greet,
eat, drink (a new bar will be open on the concourse in time for the festival -
mine’s a pint of Byker Jazz), catch-up
and listen to some of the best jazz around. The Sage Gateshead’s
behind-the-scenes year round education work takes centre stage with
performances ranging from the BMus Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music course to
the Young Musicians Programme. In addition, other regional ensembles get the
opportunity to shine in front of a captive jazz public. There is sure to be
something for everyone. The stars of tomorrow will mix it with the stars of
today. Check them out. Free to all. A printed programme detailing performance
