This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Live streaming from Jack's Place #4 - Feb. 17

Indiana for starters, bright and breezy, Jamie Brownfield on a hiding to nothing taking the role of Louis Armstrong. Jack Cotterill's focus this evening was on Armstrong's Ambassador Satch album recorded during a mid-fifties European tour. Brownfield did as well as any trumpeter taking on West end Blues. Undecided was decidedly swift, Cotterill on the ride cymbal, kicking it along as Louis, sorry, Jamie, blew hotter than hot, Andrzej Baranek, keyboards and bassist Ed Harrison admirably keeping up. 
A couple more before the hour was up...Irving Berlin's The Song is Ended (But the Melody Lingers On) featuring a swinging piano solo from Baranek, and to finish, to quote Cotterill, a quite mental  take on Tiger Rag. Next week (Wed 24) an hour of requests.
