The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Live streaming from Jack's Place #3: A Taste of New Orleans - Feb. 10

Week three of Jack Cotterill's Wednesday evening live streams focused on the cradle of jazz, New Orleans, Louisiana. For starters, Emmet Cohen's Harlem Shuffle as on Herlin Riley's New Direction album. Riley...Blakey...Wynton...LCJO...Riley, it's all about connections. And on to Jazz Me Blues, played at just about every Dixieland session up and down the land.  We're going to make you more miserable now announced Jack Cotterill...St James' Infirmary (Jamie Brownfield plungering way down in the morgue). Our host being quick to add that he actually enjoys a blues, they're not at all miserable, they're uplifting (or words to that effect). Agreed! 

A tune for duo - Brownfield, trumpet, Cotterill, drums, In the Court of King Oliver composed by W. Marsalis (on the album the late Ellis Marsalis plays piano). At the Darktown Strutters' Ball  introduced Andrzej Baranek, piano and bassist Ed Harrison, each soloing effectively before Brownfield grabbed a solo replete with numerous fleeting quotes for good measure. 

Jamie Brownfield spoke of his first visit to N'Awlins. How about this for a gig? Our trumpeter was in a band as part of the in-flight entertainment at 30,000 feet over the Atlantic on the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner scheduled service to NOLA. The perk? Four days in the Big Easy!       
     
Time to attend a New Orleans' funeral. Just a Greater Walk With Thee into a joyous second line Trombone Joe (comp. H. Riley). Time for two more, first a sprightly High Society finishing up with a swinging When the Saints go Marching In. Next week (Wednesday 17) at eight, it's a Louis Armstrong special.
