This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Swinging into 2021 with Rico Tomasso - Jan. 8

Good evening and a happy new year to everyone! exclaimed Rico. To begin, Hotter Than That. Accompanying Rico this evening, pianist Luca Filastro. A good start, particularly given the fact Luca's contribution was via his mobile phone! East of the Sun (and West of the Moon) for the second time in twenty four hours - Kansas Smitty's Alec Harper and Will Barry played it during their Stan Getz-Kenny Barron set. Rico was keen to show an example of Luca's artwork, a caricature of Louis Armstrong (see image), so, not only a great piano player but an aspiring painter to boot! 
Shortly before going online Rico received the news that Tony Pitt has died. BSH most recently heard the respected guitarist at the Globe in Morning Lane, London (September 2018). Sadly missed, a great chap, said our host. Appropriately, Rico and Luca played If We Never Meet Again. 

Harry Warren's I Only Have Eyes for You with Rico singing Al Dubin's lyrics.  Duo gigs are nothing new to Rico, citing many such gigs with Keith Nichols, Black and Tan Fantasy being one such. And so, this evening Rico and Luca gave it a go. You could say they pulled it off. Up next,  Rico singing You are My Lucky Star as he used to play it with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, arranged by our trumpeter for this evening's live stream. Time for Rico to get out the flugel to play I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You. Mellifluous flugel, a weaver of dreams at the piano, perhaps the tune of the evening.

Almost time to go. Next week, Rico's sparring partner will be Martin Wheatley. So, to end, a favourite of Louis Armstrong's - High Society.
