Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rico's Popup Louis - Nov. 27

Rico Tomasso (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals); Craig Milverton (piano)

Walking My Baby Back Home opened this evening's Popup Louis. It took three attempts to get it off the starting grid, a computer glitch the culprit. Rico Tomasso's remote cyberspace co-star, Craig Milverton (see pictured in a relaxed pose), added a touch of Oscar P to the proceedings. Rico's muted trumpet work on Topsy won appreciative online comment  and Rico duly thanked Craig for his equally good contribution.
Portobello Brewing's Star (British Bitter, 4.3%) accompanied Rico on Richard Rodgers' Where or When. A first time beer for our host. 9 Hop Kent Pale Ale (Westerham Brewery, 4.0%) accompanied your reviewer, another first time beer. Switching to flugelhorn, Rico dedicated Sergio Mihanovich's waltz Sometime Ago to his friend Roy Williams. Rico and Roy used to play the tune in tribute to the Clark Terry-Bob Brookmeyer partnership. Staying with his flugelhorn, Samba time cried Rico...Milo's Other Samba the tune, again an appreciation of Terry and Brookmeyer.

Rico and Craig have an album in the works.  Ain't the Gravy Good? will be on it and they duly played it, Rico singing. Craig rattlin' the ivories. More Ellington - Warm Valley, lush melody, Rico again on flugel. And to close, Vignette based on the chords of Sweet Sue as played by Coleman Hawkins. Next week Rico welcomes back Denny Ilett.
