Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Big Band Bash - Oct. 14

Coastal Sound Radio's Big Band Bash programme attracts an international audience. Now in its second year, Steve Walker's weekly celebration of all things big band goes from strength to strength. Last night's edition included many familiar names and a few new ones.

Big band leader and trumpeter Walker is certainly well-connected with frequent on-air plugs for his show from the likes of LA based Tom Garling, Gordon Goodwin and Andy Martin, John Fedchock in New York and, closer to home, Laurence Cottle. Walker wished Dusko Goykovic a happy 89th birthday and played the trumpeter's Haze on the Danube as performed with the NDR Radio Orchestra.

David Gold's album with Dublin's Hot House Big Band included Norwegian Wood (BSH's editor reviewed Gold's Heaven on Their Minds in July 2017). Walker played it to mark what would have been John Lennon's 80th birthday (October 9). Jeff Benedict playing Sting, Laurie Johnson playing Ravel's Bolero, Jiggs Whigham in ballad mode with Berlin's Rias Big Band playing Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry, a playlist most big band fans would heartily applaud.

Florida's Raíces Jazz Orchestra (a new name to your reviewer) made an impression with Eye of the Hurricane, Dave Holland's all-star ensemble playing Triple Dance from What Goes Around offered something a little more contemporary and a couple of new bands - Roger Fox's outfit from New Zealand and the Sydney Jazz Orchestra playing Weather Report's Teen Town - made for a good mix of material.
