This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Adrian Cox: South of the Border - Oct. 18

Preacher Adrian Cox took his Sunday Service on the road today, assisted in his missionary work by the Reverend Simon Picton. Our duo headed south, it would be quite a journey. Toulouse Lautrec their base, Cox entrusted Picton to come up with a set list and offer guidance on pronunciation. A mere nine tunes today as Cox more or less finished on time, 'time' being two o'clock. 

Cox's whistle-stop tour took in several South American countries to play a selection of tunes with a 'Spanish tinge'. Mama Inez began today's service. A couple of vocals by Cox -  Maria Elena and the set closer South of the Border - and one by Picton - Tipi Tipi Tin - otherwise it was Latin instrumental all the way. Composer Ernesto Lecuona supplied three numbers - Say 'Si Si', La Comparsa (Cox recalled hearing Paquito D'Rivera play the tune in New York) and Siboney - alongside Joseph Lacalle's Amapola and the popular Mexican song of the day,  Cielito Lindo. 

The amiable Cox thanked Toulouse Lautrec for once again hosting his Sunday Service, thanked Simon Picton for working with him and noted that some one hundred people were watching today's live stream. Next week our clarinetist will be away touring in Scandinavia and upon his return will be obliged to self-isolate which means on November 1 it'll be a solo clarinet and vocals set.
