Rather than go to The Sage and listen to Sir John and Lady Cleopatra tell me how wonderful they are, I opted to drive to Darlington and catch Scott Hamilton and Steve Fishwick at the Arts Centre. Well worth the 45 minute drive for a 'comfortable' evening of neo-bop. Steve Fishwick impressed and the ubiquitous Colin Oxley once again provided some interesting guitar work both soloing and 'comping. Scott Hamilton played well although he struggled on Strayhorn's 'UMMG' (Upper Manhattan Medical Group). Steve Brown, another ubiquitistic person, and Dave Withard gave sound backing although I'd like it if Steve Brown, just once, would stop smiling.

I'm a Lucky Guy
Listened to Mingus - 'I'll Remember April' 1962 Bud Powell on piano, Eric Dolphy alto and Booker Ervin tenor. Pretty wild with Bud playing great piano. Cooled down with Becky Kilgore singing Maxine Sullivan songs. 'It's Wonderful', 'You're a Lucky Guy' among others. The latter is a relatively unknown Sammy Cahn tune and should be done more often
