Bebop Spoken There

George Porter Jr.: ''To me, syncopation is like jazz. It wasn't meant for the masses. It was meant just for a hip few". (DownBeat, May 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Big screen, small screen Friday (Oct. 23)

Tomorrow (Friday) Newcastle's Everyman Cinema is to screen a documentary about one of the most famous jazz clubs on the planet. Oliver Murray's Ronnie's looks at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club - Gerrard Street (the old place) and Frith Street. A running time of 106 mins should allow for plenty of archive footage - name the names and almost all will have graced the stage - and numerous talking heads. 6:00pm start for a Covid-secure screening. Telephone booking at: 0872 436 9060. *

Afterwards, go for a quiet, socially distanced drink or make your way home in time to open a bottle and settle down to a night of jazz documentaries on BBC 4. At nine o'clock it's Count Basie through His Own Eyes. Director Jeremy Marre has unearthed rare home movies and photo albums which all Basie fans will want to see. Following Basie at 10:20, from swing to bop, it's Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes. Sophie Huber's 2019 film looks at the record label established way back by Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff. To round off the evening, round midnight (11:45 to be exact), Jazz Piano Gold is a welcome repeat of a programme first shown in February 2012. Basie, Ellington, Monk and our own Stan Tracey feature. That's Friday night sorted!

What a great opportunity to see "The greats" You are so fortunate to be able to see this. We have an "Everyman" cinema in York, but nothing like this...enjoy!

Liz - Ronnie's is on at York tomorrow - 6:00pm. Well worth making the effort.

I didn't know that, not seen it advertised, but then York is not known to have a big Jazz following. I would love to have seen it, but am avoiding public places just to keep safe, thanks anyway Lance
