Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Andy Champion on Radio 3 tonight (Friday) and again tomorrow (midnight)

This year's TUSK Festival is an online affair. The pandemic did its best to scupper the annual new and experiemental music extravaganza but the promoters and partner organisation Sage Gateshead decided to move events online, lock, stock and barrel. BBC Radio 3 is onboard and, as the festival is a born and bred Tyneside institution, several artists from the region feature prominently.

Tonight's edition of Late Junction (11:00pm) and tomorrow's Freeness (midnight Saturday) present performances by turntablist Mariam Rezaei and Stephen Bishop (electronics), Cath and Phil Tyler and a new quartet formed by bassist Andy Champion. Caröm is the name of Champion's new band. The line-up is a familiar one: Champion, bass, Zoë Gilby, voice, erstwhile Tyneside-resident Graeme Wilson, reeds, and percussionist Christian Alderson of Archipelago fame.

We'll ignore/forgive Radio Times informing its many readers that TUSK is 'normally held at Sage Gateshead in Newcastle' and focus on the content of each programme. Caröm's session was recorded at Blank Studios (definitely to be found in Newcastle!) and Freeness' presenter, Corey Mwamba, will, likely as not, say a few words about the music and his fellow musician and friend, Andy Champion.
