Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

From Bratislava to NYC and onto Chicago

Bratislava Hot Serenaders live streaming from Bratislava - Oct 11

A ticketed live stream from Bratislava presented one or two challenging pre-performance moments. Would there be a Facebook reminder? What was the time difference? What did UTC + 01 mean? Did BST come into the calculation? There would be much fiddling and searching for an all important access code...

An American Facebook friend messaged to say the concert was under way. More fiddling and searching. Still nothing. Eventually...there they were, the Bratislavas on stage. Slavic languages aren't a strong point, the orchestra's MC spoke at a rate of knots and he wasn't speaking in English! Other than 'Jean Goldkette' and Tatranský Express the MC's introductions were a mystery. Time to open a well deserved bottle of beer (Taylor's Landlord). From a theatre somewhere in Bratislava the Bratislavas were well into their set. So much so, they began taking curtain calls. Yeah, the Newcastle branch of the BHS' fan club had tuned in rather late!

The Glenn Crytzer Quintet live streaming from NYC: The Courtyard Concert #10 - Oct. 11

Hannah Gill (vocals); Mike Davis (trumpet); Ricky Alexander (tenor sax); Glenn Crytzer (guitar, vocals); Rob Adkins (double bass)

Meanwhile in New York, Glenn Crytzer was once again gigging in the alley below his apartment. A very nice 19° made for comfortable conditions to play a mid-afternoon Facebook live stream gig. This week Crytzer was once again working with a favourite performer at the Mike Durham International Classic Jazz Party, Mr Mike Davis and reeds man Ricky Alexander. On string bass, Mr Rob Adkins, and, perhaps the star of today's show, Ms Hannah Gill.

That's the Glory of Love sang Gill, then Moonray and that was it, time was up. Crytzer and co went out on This Can't be Love. Excellent. Time for another beer (Greene King IPA Reserve), then tune to Sky Arts at nine o'clock for Born in Chicago
