Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Coastal Sound's Big Band Bash - Oct. 7

Based in Skegness, Coastal Sound is a community radio station broadcasting/streaming to a worldwide audience. Last year trumpeter and big band MD Steve Walker began presenting a weekly programme devoted to all things big band. And here he is, early autumn 2020, pandemic or no pandemic, continuing to play the music of swinging ensembles, past and present.

This week's two hour feast (Wednesday at eight) ranged far and wide: Bob Mintzer playing Neal Hefti, John C Smith's Pecos River Brass from Texas, Wynton and the Lincoln Center crew tipping a hat to Brubeck's Take Five (Ted Nash the featured soloist), a meeting of Chris Dean's Syd Lawrence Orchestra and Germany's SWR Big Band crowding - pre-Covid! - onto a stage to tear up Jumpin' at the Woodside, Steps Ahead working with the WDR Big Band, Bobby Shew with Louie Bellson, Buddy Rich, the list goes on.

Regular listeners to Big Band Bash will have noted two things (perhaps more!): much of the playlist is music by present day recording/performing outfits with historic recordings a less prominent element. And, it took a while for the penny to drop, it seems Mr W has yet to play a track featuring a vocalist. Now that is hard core! If this sounds like your kind of big band music be sure to logon Wednesdays (8:00pm) at:
