Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Julija Jacenaite & Alan Law @ Jazz Cafe Mezzanine - May 22

Julija Jacenaite (vocals); Alan Law (piano)
(Review by Russell)

Julija Jacenaite thanked the audience for choosing to spend a couple of hours on the mezzanine floor in Newcastle Arts Centre rather than be out and about on a glorious late spring/early summer afternoon. Our Tyneside resident Lithuanian composer/singer/vocal tutor sang a selection of songs in, variously, English, Lithuanian and Portuguese in the company of the ever-affable pianist Alan Law.

We've heard Julija sing All of MeMistyMood Indigo and other numbers at Jazz Cafe jam sessions and at this Wednesday afternoon engagement she sang them again and no one present raised any objection to hearing them one more time. The Beatles' All My LovingValerie (more Amy W than Zutons), a couple of original compositions, including Down the River, JJ, as always, offered her personal, often dramatic, take on each.

A funky SummertimeThe Girl from Ipanema sung entirely in Portuguese, Law's walking left hand on I Got Rhythm, JJ and Alan clearly enjoy performing as a duo with our vocalist at ease chatting to the audience - she understands the Geordie expression alreet! - which, on this occasion, included members of the Jacenaite family. Standards, Latin numbers (meat and drink to pianist Law), a bluesy streak throughout, this Jazz Cafe Mezzanine gig is likely to encourage those present to get along to the next one (Wednesday, June 5) and the one after that...
