Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Billy Brandt - City Noir

(Review by Lance)

Billy Brandt takes us down these mean streets. The blurb describes his voice as being like dark roasted coffee with a  hint of cream - I'll drink to that. It's a Bogie movie, a Jim Thompson novel, a painting by Edward Hopper, a stranger you meet on a train, Route 66 in a minor key, maybe Lana Turner or Barbara Stanwyck helping you to murder their surplus to requirement husbands.

Brandt composed the dark lyrics which he sings/narrates like Tom Waits may have done before he swallowed the razorblades. Maybe this a new genre - jazz noir. The jazz is ever present with solos by sax, piano, B3. To fully enjoy, don your Fedora, pour a shot of Bourbon, invite your neighbour's wife/husband to break a few of the Ten Commandments and maybe shoot a couple of guys whilst you wait.

The City Noir he sings/writes about is actually Seattle where Brandt now lives and, whilst the city's tourist board may not adopt it as their anthem, perhaps they should - it would give the citizens another reason to be sleepless and to go out and enjoy the nightlife.

Love it - Mike Hammer has moved to Seattle!
