Bebop Spoken There

Christian McBride: ''We knew back in the day that Emmet [Cohen] had it.'' (DownBeat July, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender 2018: Sunday afternoon in the Fire Station

Chronotic Brass:  Zach Fox (alto sax, vocals); Matthew Bartlett (tenor sax); Alex Flanders (trumpet); Louis Clayden (trumpet); Tommy Wise (trombone); Bill Duberly (trombone); Jon Whittaker (baritone sax); Jack Dobson (drums).
Led by alto saxist Fox, who also sang, they gave a jazzy slant to contemporary pop songs that worked well. Impressive too was trumpet player Alex Flanders and tenorist Matthew Bartlett.
The music was great with the baritone sax acting in a bass capacity, excellent soloists and, at times, a township feel to it.
They all were or are part of the Durham Uni jazz scene.
Kate Peters Trio: Kate (vocal/perc); Martin Longhawn (keys); John Marley (bass guitar).
Having heard Hailey Tuck, Zöe Gilby and Norma Winstone down in The Crypt it may have seemed that Kate Peters was in a no-win situation but, the girl did good and lost little by comparision.
Almost Like Being in Love (coincidentally ALBIL, like Norma's Heather on the Hill was also from the show Brigadoon. What's the odds on hearing two numbers from the same show one after the other by two different singers at two different sessions? But, as I remember, Brigadoon was a fantasy musical where strange things happened). Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (in Spanish); Nearness of You (just piano and voice); Bring it on Back to Me; Sweet Georgia Brown (terrific piano solo); I Wish I Knew How it Felt etc.; Orange Colored Sky - Flash! Bam! Alakazam! summed up Kate's performance. Promotion to The Crypt next year?
Martin was in fine form with solid support from John.
Both of the above gigs were free! Sale of the Century.
Lance.
