Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Georgina Jackson @ the 606 - Sept. 4

Georgina Jackson (vocals, flugelhorn); Graham Harvey (piano); Joe Pettitt (bass); Matt Home (drums).

Another delightful set livestreamed from the 606. Jackson sings well, connects with the audience and blows cool flugel.

A choice selection of tunes sung (and swung) made this an enjoyable hour and provided a refreshing alternative to the predominantly instrumental workouts of recent weeks - there's room for both.

Georgina has a liking for Sinatra songs which, for me gave her a head start. Where or When, always a great number, followed by The Lady is a Tramp, complete with verse. I've always wondered why today's singers don't update the lyrics to the old classics e.g. The verse could include "Alas I missed the Superbowl and what is quite as sad, I was never at a party where they honoured Joey Biden etc."

More Sinatra - and Rodgers & Hart - with I Didn't Know What Time it Was. Surprisingly, Georgina revealed that she'd only recently discovered this marvellous tune - made me feel very old!

Misty, played on flugel, - as cool a rendering of Garner's tune deserved and, indeed, got.

Frim-Fram Sauce. the world is still searching for this legendary recipe - chances are they may have already tasted it without knowing!

And so the goodies rolled out. Come Rain or Come Shine (a gorgeous vocal/piano duo number), What a Difference a Day Made (a là Dinah W), Do I Love You? (a là Peggy), Madelaine (a number by Bobby Shew that Jackson put words to), All of Me, All the Way and, to finish - Take the A Train.

An enjoyable set with some fine piano from Harvey, bass from Pettitt and drums from Home. - Lance
