Bebop Spoken There

Christian McBride: ''We knew back in the day that Emmet [Cohen] had it.'' (DownBeat July, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Livestream @ the 606: Brandon Allen Quartet - Sept. 25

Brandon Allen (tenor sax); Carl Orr (guitar); Lawrence Cottle (bass guitar); Ian Thomas (drums)

606 on a Saturday night is like The Globe on a Sunday night - a guaranteed evening of great jazz. Tonight at the former venue, Allen blew some blistering tenor which was no surprise given his past performances both here and on record.

Scofield's Wabash 3 set the scene. This wasn't going to be a smooth session - it never is at 606 when Brandon's in the ring - sorry I mean when he's on stage. He can emulate Ammons, Turrentine or just about anyone without a suggestion of plagiarism. He's his own man even when playing other people's songs and, let's face it, 99% of the greatest recorded jazz has been by musicians playing other people's music. That's why composers compose, so other people can play their music. Produce something even they themselves didn't know they'd created and, of course, add a dollar or two via royalties.

Other numbers in thie first set of this livestream included: Three Views of a Secret; Chariots; Chan's Song; Autumn Nocturne and Better Days Ahead

Fellow Aussie Orr was on fire and Cottle and Thomas kept the pot boiling before I moved from Fulham to Tottenham where Anthony Joshua wasn't on fire and the walls didn't come tumbling down. Still, with the 67,000 seater stadium sold out he probably didn't go away empty-handed!

There may not have been a knockout at the fight but every number at the 606 was a tko - Brandon Allen and co are contenders - Lance
