This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Perdido Street Jazzmen @ Darlington Market Place - Sept. 24

I Can't Give You Anything But Love on a beautiful sunny September morning. Yes, morning! Darlington Borough Council continues to support cultural events as we slowly emerge from the dark days of the pandemic and this early bird session presented an on-street session by the Perdido Street Jazzmen. 

Trombonist Eugene Farrar shared vocal duties with veteran reedsman Frank Brooker, today playing clarinet and tenor sax. When You're Smiling, On the Sunny Side of the Street...the Perdido Street guys really were on the sunny side. It's always like this in Darlington! 

All of Me featured Farrar's vocals and the first of several sets drew to a close with Bei Mir Bist du Schön. Following a short break the Perdido Street Jazzmen would wander up to Duke Street to play a second set. Your correspondent wandered up to the station to catch a train to Durham to arrive in time for Sue Ferris' lunchtime concert at the Gala Theatre. Russell

I missed the first set but followed the band up Duke Street where the short programme included When you wore a tulip, Shine and The curse of an aching heart. Frank on clarinet this time, and on vocals till the battery on the mic gave up.
After that they were back to the Market Square for lunch and another set.
