Paul’s guest tonight was Andrzej Baranek. A man well known in these parts as a hard-driving pianist who can handle any jazz situation - particularly hard bop. However, the ten tunes chosen were mainly standards, two of which were on Suzanne Fonseca’s set list when she played this venue two days ago, Misty and Honeysuckle Rose. Andrzej gets a great sound from his keyboard so the house upright was not utilised.
On drums was Dave Walsh another drummer with a wealth of experience who holds a tutorial position at Leeds Conservatoire. He did some nice solos using sticks and brushes as well as establishing a good rapport with Ed Harrison who by now must regard the Railway as his second home!
Paul Hartley is another fine guitarist that has been playing around this area for many years and his style I think has been influenced by Peter Bernstein with maybe a touch of Grant Green. I also like the fact that he uses the mic to good effect for announcing tunes etc.
The next jazz show at the Railway is Sunday Sept. 19 with reedsman Liam Byrne’s Quartet. Mike Farmer
