The last time Frank Griffith played this venue was before lockdown and his rhythm section contained a superb pianist, Micha Grey. However, for this gig he brought along another group of very capable musicians led by guitarist Alan Jeffs.
Jeffs I remember from Jam Sessions that he ran at the Brewers Arms, Neston, in the Wirral area. It attracted many aspiring players from the Liverpool area.
The bass player tonight was local legend Dave Lynane who has long been an important part of the Manchester jazz scene playing in Maynard Ferguson’s UK band and the Joe Palin Trio at the famous Club 43.
On drums was the ever dependable Eryl Roberts who tonight used his brushes more than usual due to the set list having many tunes featuring Griffith playing clarinet rather than tenor sax. He gets a great sound on his clarinet and on tenor he displayed a strong Rollins influence especially on Monk’s Nutty and the Cole Porter standard You do Something to me.
Tomorrow at the Railway - Sept. 7 - guitarist Steve Oaks plus Jim Collins on tenor sax. Mike Farmer
